Seattle Drafting a QB?
I am not saying this will happen. I’m not even saying I want this to happen.I’m just saying, I would not be shocked if Seattle drafted Jalen Milroe this week. Maybe even trade up into the back half of the first round or the start of the 2nd round.
This draft reminds me a little bit of the draft where the Baltimore Ravens took Lamar Jackson. Seattle’s coach, Mike McDonald, was there to witness it. Coach McDonald witnessed how Lamar took over the Ravens organization and eventually earning two MVP trophies.
Seattle is in the perfect position to draft a QB this year. They are loaded with draft picks, they have the cap space to sign whoever they want, and they have two QBs who are basically on 1 year contracts. Seattle signed Drew Lock this off-season to a 1 year deal. Sam Darnolds contract allows Seattle to cut him after 1 season if they decide he isn’t the guy for the future. Even Sam Howell has 1 year left on his contract. It could be wise to take a chance on a QB this year to sit behind and learn. They may not want to force themselves into a position where in a year they may have to take a QB and start him as a rookie.
Seattle has so much money next year that it may not even matter. They may decide to pay a QB and still have money to get any other player they want. However, this front office has completely rearranged their books the last 16 months. They rebuilt how their team is constructed. They got rid of some skill players on long-term expensive deals and replaced them with younger and cheaper front 7 players. They have an opportunity to build a young OL that can stay intact for years to come. With all the young players we have, maybe they feel they could pay a QB for a few years before they need to start paying their own. I’m not so sure they go through all work of restructuring their books just to add to it so soon.
I think the chances of Seattle drafting a QB is pretty high. A lot of people will bring up the signing of Drew Lock. I'd argue that does 2 things for them. 1) It doesn’t force them to draft a QB and also gives vibes to other franchises that they aren't interested in this class. 2) If something happens to Darnold it gives you insurance and makes it so you aren't in a position to start a QB his rookie year. Seattle believes they can compete this year, but they also wanna build to compete for years to come. This is also a year where not all the QBs are graded out super high, so if you see a QB you like you have every opportunity to draft him.
I have no idea if Seattle is even interested in Jalen Milroe. However I do know a lot of people think Milroe could be the next Lamar Jackson. I also know Seattles coach has witnessed his rise to fame.
